ILOs:
- State that in the diagnosis and management of liver disease, it is important to distinguish between space occupying lesions or masses, and diffuse liver disease
- List these common histological patterns of diffuse liver disease: acute hepatitis, acute cholestasis/ cholestatic hepatitis, fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis, chronic biliary disease and hepatic vascular disease. For each, briefly describe their clinical and/or histological appearances, and their most common causes and/or underlying disease processes
- Explain, with examples, that drug-induced liver disease is common and may present as almost any pattern of liver disease
- For space occupying (mass) lesions, explain that the main differential diagnosis is between inflammatory lesions e.g. abscesses, and neoplasms
- List and describe commonly encountered hepatic neoplasms including primary liver tumours and metastases
- Describe the common clinical manifestation of liver disease and understand the mechanisms by which liver disease leads to these
- Discuss how to investigate a patient with liver disease
- Describe the common management strategies for patients with liver disease
- Relevant teaching to revisit after this lecture
- Describe the normal liver macro and microstructure
- Define “acute”, “chronic” and “acute-on-chronic” with regards to inflammation and liver injury
- What is cirrhosis?
- Graph showing the increasing prevalence of liver disease…
- What are the key features of the clinical history of liver disease?
- Outline the LFTs and what may be occurring when they are deranged
- Which tests are most important to look at the function of the liver
Diffuse Liver Disease - Acute Patterns
- What are the different patterns of diffuse liver disease
