ILOs:
- Be able to explain...
- That the posterior part of the neck provides support and contains the cervical spine and its associated muscles
- That the anterior part of the neck has visceral structures at the midline and neurovascular structures more laterally
- That the anterior and lateral parts of the neck are divided into anterior and posterior triangles
- That the root of the neck is the important boundary zone between the neck, the thorax and the upper limb. It lies internal to the first rib and contains the apex of the lung.
- Recognize the features of cervical vertebrae and the intervertebral joints and appreciate how they provide for movement of the head and neck.
- Appreciate the anatomical layout of the anterior triangle of the neck and to be able to recognize:
- the thyroid gland and its relations
- the hyoid bone, the components of the larynx and the infrahyoid muscles
- the carotid sheath and its contents and the sympathetic trunk
- Appreciate the anatomical layout of the posterior triangle of the neck and to be able to recognize:
- its boundaries: the sternocleidomastoid and the trapezius muscles and demonstrate their actions and thus the integrity of their nerve supply
- the subclavian artery and vein and the brachial plexus
- the accessory nerve
- the carotid sheath and its contents
- Have knowledge of the concept of the root of the neck and to
- appreciate the extent of the apex of the lung and the cervical pleura and their relationship to the subclavian vessels, the ventral rami of C8 and T1 spinal nerves and the inferior trunk of the brachial plexus and, on the left side, to the thoracic duct.
- appreciate the location of the stellate/cervicothoracic ganglion and the continuity of the cervical and thoracic sympathetic trunk. To describe the source and distribution of sympathetic fibres to the head.
- Recognise features of the neck on clinical images.
